This charming Korean restaurant specializes in a variety of hearty, flavorful dishes that showcase the diversity and depth of Korean cuisine, making it a reliable spot for locals and visitors craving genuine taste and satisfying portions.
The menu is a delightful journey through classic Korean staples, with highlights that include the tender and savory Meat Jun Plate—a pan-fried beef dish that bursts with rich umami—and the crispy, golden Chicken Katsu Mix Plate that pairs perfectly with fresh, vibrant sides like cucumbers and kimchee. For those seeking something uniquely comforting, the BBQ Chicken and Fish Jun and the Tofu Soup present an enticing balance of smoky, hearty, and mildly spicy flavors, all beautifully complemented by an assortment of banchan such as bean sprouts, seaweed, and steamed broccoli carrots.
If you’re a fan of noodles, Sam’s offers Korean favorites like Mandoo Kooksoo (noodles with beef and vegetables) and the warming Hat Kook Soo noodle soup that embraces you from the first spoonful. The Oahu Special Kalbi and Mochiko Chicken, the latter made from mochi flour and deep-fried to a deliciously crispy perfection, are also popular choices, delivering rich flavors that linger pleasantly on the palate.
The atmosphere at Sam’s Delicatessen strikes a casual, comfort-food vibe, making it a great spot for a relaxed meal whether you're dining in or getting food to go. The ability to swap out sides and proteins allows for a customized plate that feels fresh and personalized each visit. However, some diners have noted moments where the service could feel less warm, emphasizing that your experience might be best when pursuing takeout or casual dining.
While most guests appreciate the generous portions and authentic tastes—especially highlighting standout dishes like the Meat Jun and the refreshing cucumber kimchi—some have found certain items, like the kimchee, less memorable in flavor or consistency. Small hiccups, such as occasional presence of gnats or portion imbalances, have been mentioned, yet many patrons understand these as minor realities of island dining and remain loyal to the hearty plates that Sam’s consistently delivers.
In essence, Sam’s Delicatessen is a slice of Korean comfort right in Honolulu that invites you to explore delicious traditional flavors with a laid-back, easygoing spirit. Whether it’s the satisfying crunch of the Tofu Katsu or the warm embrace of a steaming bowl of Kimchee Soup, there’s an honest, humble quality to the food here that makes it a worthy stop for anyone craving a genuine taste of Korea on the island.
It was ok. Got a mochiko chicken plate since a lot of people seem to have good things to say about it. It was pretty average. The portion size was decent for the price, but the taste wasn’t very memorable. The sides were as expected, except for the kimchee. It was very watery tasting. I tried my friend’s meat jun and that one tasted pretty good. If I ever return again, I would get the meat jun.
Super 'ono plates. Great comfort food vibes and fun to swap out sides and proteins however you feel! Favorite sides are the cucumber kimchi, bean sprouts, and sweet boiled potato :)
Food is good. Owner is always rude and unfriendly now it’s almost comical - we order to go.
Ordered the Sam's special bento with fried noodles. Their food is so tasty but 2 of my bento's had gnats flying around trapped inside the bento box, which is kinda gross. It freaked me out but then my better half pointed out the fact that when we are cutting up fruit say, those gnats come around quickly and land on our stuff all the time. Moral of the story is this kind of things happen, but maybe they could take a better look at things before they seal the boxes. Like I said, the food was delicious in spite of my initial ick factor. I will go back for sure. Their prices have increased a bit more than I was expecting but then again, whose prices haven't. Great flavor profiles and generous portions.
Got double mac salad on my combination plate. A single serving of mac salad probably won't be enough.
Today I got to try their Yook Gae Jang, Hot Beef Soup, and it turned out good. The worker, seemed like an owner, was very nice.
